"One Man's Odyssey in the Diamond Trade" Retired De Beers executive, Robin Walker, gave presentations to GIA students and alumni in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, Chicago, Arlington, and New York City throughout the month of July. www.gia.edu His 40 year career included: rough diamond buyer and prospector in West Africa; personal assistant to Sir Philip Oppenheimer, president of the De Beers Central Selling Organization (CSO); general manager of West African operations; and, public relations, lecturing, and speechwriting with the CSO in London in their Corporate Communications and Marketing Liaison Departments. When speaking about the conflict diamond issue, he said that because of his earlier love for Sierra Leone the subject "cast the darkest shadow" over him; however, he said, "The diamond industry is making huge efforts to stamp out the trade in [conflict] diamonds." Walker also said that diamonds could also be extremely beneficial for the countries where they are mined, citing Botswana as an example, saying it heavily relied on diamonds for its economic stability. |

| The World Peace Foundation held discussions at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University on October 19 - 20, 2001 on the subject of Conflict Diamonds. The initiative was sponsored and organized by the WPF Program on Intrastate Conflict, the Carr Center on Human Rights Policy, and the Project on Justice in Transition - all within the Kennedy School of Government, and the World Peace Foundation, and independent institution in its 92nd year.
